Calluses & Corns - Foot and Ankle Wellness Centre

About This Condition

What Is It?

Calluses and corns are protective layers of dead skin cells that are compacted in certain areas. Commonly, they are a result of consistent friction from skin rubbing against irregularities or bony areas in footwear. The big difference between calluses and corns is that calluses form on the soles of the feet whereas corns tend to form on the toes. Since there is a burning sensation linked to calluses and corns, one way to reduce the friction is by wearing padding or moleskin on the affected areas.

Causes

Calluses and corns are, quite often, symptoms of other foot ailments. This is typically the thickening of the skin – a result of friction within the foot – which is a result of bone misalignment, proturberance, or friction from shoes. Calluses can be found anywhere on the foot; however, they are commonly found on the soles of the feet. Corns can form in-between or on the toes; in this case, they are called “soft corns”.

Treatment

Calluses and corns can both be treated by Dr. Chaudhry at the Foot and Ankle Wellness Centre. Please remember that if you have calluses or corns, you should not cut them off yourself or apply over-the-counter remedies.
